Demographics - We include the whole LGBTI spectrum, plus some het-ish couples and individuals who already participate and fit well in LGBTI spaces.
Attendees - The guest list is our treasure. Everyone goes through a screening process. Our current attendees are amazing people, and we test out a few dozen new people each party.
Promotion - We limit our announcements to particular focussed groups. Primal grows mainly by personal invitations of other appropriate people, mainly lovers of current attendees.
Themes - We choose a different theme for every party. It's meant to be evocative, and open to lots of possibilities. It influences the dress code, decorations, music and food. We want the theme to be inspiring rather than limiting. Themes tend to be unusual, and historic or mythic.
Music - The hosts are both musicians and music scholars. We like to provide different music at each Primal. Don't expect the usual "thump, thump, thump" so common elsewhere. We avoid tracks that use a drum machine. We want a mix of mood music and hard driving, with lots textures and variety. We draw from 12 centuries and dozens of cultures and styles. One party had music that was all before 1650. Nearly everyone loved it. We also throw in some camp surprises.
Dancing - We like it when people dance, though it often gets too crowded.
Food - We like to provide plenty of tasty snacks, with protein, veg, fruit and carbs. We keep it replenished all night. It's not meant to be enough to replace dinner.
Dress Code - We require all attendees to make an effort for the evening. There are lots of ways to dress for Primal. Boring street clothes is not one of them.
Venues - We choose clean, well-lighted, warm, safe venues. We do not announce a specific address to non-members.
Layout and Decorations - We try to transform the space, providing a variety of energies and textures. And we change it some each time.
Membership infrastructure - We try to streamline the process of joining Primal, responding to RSVP, and entering at the door.
Volunteers - We're an all-volunteer group. Everyone working any shift or duty is one of us. There is no "them" in here.
Performers - We like to add an occasional cabaret feel.
Attitude - "Welcome home."
